I will be collecting and curating press archives from three major racial uprisings in Baltimore and Maryland: an 1845 slave uprising in Southern Maryland, the 1968 Holy Week Uprisings in Baltimore, and the 2015 uprisings in response to the death of Freddie Gray. By organizing my source materials into a digital archive, I hope to show viewers the rhetorical strategies implemented by the press over time to frame these uprisings and craft myths and narratives of “black rage.” Broadly, my exhibition will scrutinize the role media plays in perpetuating racism in America through its skewed coverage of political resistance. My faculty mentor is Dr. Lindsay DiCuirci.
