I am working with Dr. Lucille McCarthy to study community engagement in one Baltimore City public library. The project will be a qualitative study, where I create a “thick description” of the physical spaces, written publications, and human interactions within that library. I am particularly concerned with processes of user engagement with libraries and librarians. I hope to understand how, if at all, this institution promotes and maintains community health, where community health refers to how people and institutions engage with and support one another. My data collection and analysis are based in a naturalistic approach that emphasizes the importance of context. My goal is to understand the roles, functions, and mechanisms of this public library as it interacts within its community ecosystem.
